Amazing Grace

  1. My favorite trick to pull with hymns in the common meter is to swap out the lyrics for this poem by Calvin of Calvin and Hobbes: http://bradshawfamily.net/~samuel/comicweb/calvin/poems/eightymillionyearsago.jpg

So "'twas grace that brought us safe thus far / and grace will lead us home" gets replaced with "this dental hardware was designed / for quick eviscerations." (Yes, "ations" is one syllable. It's what Calvin would have wanted.)

It gets funnier if, like my elementary school's theme song, the hymn is about how great martyrdom is and I hope I get persecuted someday. Because the tyrannosaur poem is, um, the opposite of that.
