Challenge: New Hobby I would like to Try

Long and Short Reviews has a set of prompts for their Weekly Wednesday Blogging Challenge for 2020. If you'd like to join me, the prompts are here and you can check in on their home page every Wednesday to find a post with links to people's responses. (If you do participate, add your own links so the rest of us can come and read them!)

This week's challenge is New Hobby I'm Trying (Or Would Like To Try).

To be perfectly honest, at this point I'm actually still trying to get back to my old hobbies. I'm getting more writing done (though there are still interruptions) and it would be nice to add some martial arts back in on top of that.

So... yeah. I'd like to get back to martial arts. I'd like to get the boys into martial arts. I have no idea how the logistics would work for this, but that's where I am.

But an actual new hobby... does learning languages count? Because I think I'd like to learn German. (I used to be semi-fluent in Spanish, but it was a particularly Castillian sort of Spanish that isn't much use here in Texas. And I was passable with Latin back in the day. But I'm two decades out of practice with either of them -- even if I still remember that Caecilius est in horto, muchas gracias -- so, y'know, this time around we'll go the other way and try German.)

How about the rest of you?

  1. I've done Latin, Greek and Spanish. If you're up to German go for it. https://pmprescott.blogspot.com/2020/01/wednesday-challenge-012220.html

  2. The idea of learning languages intrigues me, but … honestly, I just don't have the patience at this point in my life. Good luck!! Or I should say, Viel Glück!

    1. Yeah, what I want and what I can realistically achieve may not be exactly the same...

  3. Great choice... I would love to brush back up on my Spanish (I took it in high school). I took French in college...did great with the written stuff, but spoke the language with a Spanish accent. oops). My post is here: https://jhthomas.blogspot.com/2020/01/wednesday-weekly-blogging-challenge-new.html

  4. Learning languages absolutely counts, Michael! I reckon that's a cool hobby (so is martial arts) and it gives you an excuse to travel so you can test your skills out. All the wins!

    1. Travel! I'd love to take up travel as a hobby. Didn't even cross my mind, since it'll be years before that can happen.

  5. I've had to relearn a lot of my Spanish because the tot is taking it in school. So go you for wanting to learn German.

    1. I really miss doing both of those things. Kept everything flexible, brain and body alike.

  7. Same!! (regrading still trying got get into old hobbies)
My WWBC is on upping my gaming, I got a gaming-ready computer last year and we have a few different consoles but I definitely have not dedicated enough time.
Learning a language definitely counts as a hobby. I loved Rosetta Stone when I was really dedicating time. I have a friend who really put time in on duolingo (app) and really liked it.

    1. Gaming is one of the few things I can still claim as a hobby, though I'm sure there are people who wouldn't count me as a "serious gamer". Good luck!

  9. Don't they say that if you've learned more than one language, you should be able to learn new ones easier? Therefore - German is about to be your b*&*h!!
