Why Adults Can't Play Minecraft

On a strictly personal level, this may be the most depressing thing I've read in a long time:
The Hardest Game. For Adults.

I don't really miss being a kid. I like the adult I grew up to be (and, quite possibly, am still growing up to be). But there are things that I miss, and being able to just sit down and lose myself in a world of my own creation is one of them. I don't know how much of that is neurological, and how much is lack of unstructured time (and energy), and how much is lack of practice, but I miss it.

  1. I agree, that was really depressing. I play Minecraft, and so do many of my co-workers. The fact that they can't "find the purpose" is sad.

Last I played, I was working on expanding my underground base. I knocked open a wall and discovered an ENORMOUS cavern that had an underground river and lava pools and all kinds of stuff. I spent days exploring it, fighting off all the monsters, and making it mine. That experience was amazing.

Play is an important part of life. If you don't play, then your not living.

  2. I've never tried the game myself, but I'm fascinated by the difficulties I have with trying to play with Theron (using Imaginext, Transformers, or even stuffed monsters). Part of it is a control issue: he wants me to play with him, but only by doing what he wants. But part of it is that I tend to want goals and storylines, and he just wants to interact and have cool things happen.

Now, the Trio blocks, on the other hand, are completely cool. We just build stuff, and then show each other what we built.

  3. Meh. Put me down in the "I don't get it" column. I play in plenty of open-ended games. Minecraft has a very high grind:reward ratio for its open-ended stuff (building, designing), and the rest of it is not terribly varied or diverse. A lot of concepts *could* be expanded into something interesting to me, but haven't been.

  4. I do not know whether it's just me or if everybody else experiencing problems with your site. It seems like some of the written text on your posts are running off the screen. Can someone else please provide feedback and let me know if this is happening to them as well? This may be a issue with my internet browser because I've
had this happen before. Many thanks
