Blogging Challenged: Loved but Unreviewed

Right, so, the usual bit of context: Weekly Blogging Challenge over at Long and Short Reviews. Hit their homepage to see the current week's responses, and add a link to your own if you're so inclined.

This week's challenge is "Books I loved but never wrote reviews for".

Y'all, I have a confession to make.

I don't write reviews. I've made recommendations here on the Blog o' Doom and even on Facebook and Twitter, but I don't write reviews on Amazon or Goodreads or Barnes & Noble. To be honest, I'm not even entirely certain why. It's something about the format, I think. I'm just not comfortable writing there. And I feel somewhat guilty about that, because I know that reviews (even bad ones) are really critical for authors, and especially so for authors without a big promotional push behind them.

So, books that I loved but never wrote reviews for? That's... that's all of them.

  1. I like that you're honest and consistent. :) I'll be honest, too. Although I write reviews, I generally don't read them when I'm looking for a new book. It's true that reviews can help authors, but so does word of mouth. Telling readers about your favorite books and recommending them is just as important. So, I don't think you should feel guilty at all. Keep doing what you're doing! :)

    1. That actually does make me feel a little better. And I do recommend things by word of mouth quite a lot.

  2. It's okay, Michael. You've got a lot of other stuff on your plate. And talking about your favourite books is important, too, like Tricia said. :)

    My TTT.

  3. Never mind the fact that you can say something completely innocuous - and accurate - and get dogpiled on for it. Reviewing isn't for everyone, that's for certain.

  4. I'm not permitted to write reviews for posting on amazon because I was outted as an author (Duh, I'm a writer) to the 'zon and they said it was a conflict of interest. Shrugs. So, I find other ways. :-) Good post.

  5. I tend to write reviews on a quid pro quo basis. It's the only way I get reviews. I have to really like a book or movie to review it otherwise.

  6. Loved your honesty! Thanks for sharing!

Feel free to leave comments; it lets me know that people are actually reading my blog. Interesting tangents and topic drift just add flavor. Linking to your own stuff is fine, as long as it's at least loosely relevant. Be civil, and have fun!
