Holiday Horror Movies
In honor of the holiday weekend (and, y'know, the fact that I expect everybody to be out having fun elsewhere), I'd like to hear your ideas. There are some monster movies - not many, but some - that are set in particular holidays. (Halloween is the obvious one; Gremlins was set at Christmas; those are the two big examples I can think of offhand.) So, with that in mind, which holiday most needs to have a monster movie taking place? And what sort of monsters are best suited to that holiday?

How about a Thanksgiving movie with a vengeful monster turkey? Could be some kind of mutant, or could be an angry Native American spirit.
ReplyDeleteOr what's the deal with the egg delivering rabbit at Easter anyway? Rabbits don't lay eggs. Maybe something sinister is going on, like a demon rabbit. The eggs release a lesser demon that possesses anyone who eats them. If not eaten, the eggs eventually hatch and the demons start causing other kinds of havoc.
The rabbits and eggs are leftovers from true Pagan traditions Easter was an adaptation of. Both represented fertility. I think we need a Valentine's Day horror movie, with vampires— but not romantic vampires, the kind that actually suck the lifeblood out of you. They can pretend to fall madly in love with attractive young women, then turn around and use them for food.
ReplyDeleteWell, actually I knew what the rabbits and eggs signify, I was just riffing off the oddity for a horror movie idea.
ReplyDeleteAs for Valentine's horror, one could that with something mundane like a stalker or a serial killer.
Rhoadan - the turkey one has been done. (I can't remember the title - it was C, maybe D-quality work.)
ReplyDeleteI think there's some real potential for Election Day horror. The only one I'm aware of is a quasi-horror zombie episode of a television show geared toward shorts.
Related: I would pay good money to watch a movie that takes place on a college campus during a Humans vs. Zombies game.
Ah, yes, there we go, "Thankskilling". It's . . . really bad. Plenty of room for a better one.
ReplyDeleteHeh.
ReplyDeleteThe Day The Easter Eggs... Hatched
I, too, was thinking there needs to be an Easter monster movie, simply because Easter is associated with so much cuteness that the contrast would be satisfying.
ReplyDeleteWhile I love the previous suggestion of Easter eggs actually being demon eggs, I also think it would be both awesome and apt if Jesus himself were the monster. Perhaps a zombie Jesus?
"On Easter morning...he came back."
Considering how many Gnu Atheists already talk about "zombie Jesus." I think you could find some backers for that one.
ReplyDeleteI recently watched "Uncle Sam" which featured the corpse of a soldier who died in a helicopter crash killing people who did stereotypically unpatriotic things. His name was Sam and he was someone's uncle. He also gets an uncle sam costume early in the movie. It's set on the 4th of July. It also has Isaac Hayes. You need to watch this movie. It's on Netflix streaming.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds completely awful - I must watch it immediately.
