Get to know your neighbors

Okay, so I'm kind of tapped for writing ideas. (It's not that this has been such a rough week, it's that we're still recovering from last week...) That being the case, I thought I'd step back and give everyone else a chance to introduce themselves and say hello.

So:
  • Who are you? (Real names optional, character sketches encouraged)
  • How would you describe the place where you live?
  • What (if any) martial arts have you taken? (My definition is pretty loose, and includes things like fencing, wrestling, and the SCA. If you're secretly a ninja, you don't have to admit it here.)
  • What's your strangest hobby or interest? (...that you're comfortable talking about, anyway.)
  • What sorts of things do you like to read?
  • What else should we know about you?

  1. For example...

Michael Mock, husband and father, sorcerer (actually web design, but you'd be surprised how many people can't tell the difference), and wombat fan.

I live in Darkest America (actually Texas), in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, which is considerably more urban and liberal than the small-town areas of the state.

I've dabbled in at least a dozen martial arts over the years. I used to be a pretty decent wrestler, then later a pretty decent SCA light-fighter (simulated rapier combat), and finally settled into Northern Praying Mantis Kung Fu for several years. I hope to get back to martial arts in another year or so.

All my interests are strange. Reading, roleplaying, Lovecraftian horrors, zombies, really bad horror movies (and good ones, too), comics, fantasy novels... oh, and blogging.

My reading tends to run to the fantastic and imaginative: science fiction, fantasy, horror, and the various alloys and blends of those genres. On the other hand, I do occasionally read other things; I'm currently reading How Not To Write A Novel (which is both helpful and hilarious) and The World Without Us (which touches on all kinds of fascinating material).

Also, I'm doing my best to make sure that my kids are just as warped as I am.

  2. Former Conservative or FC for short

The place I live is too damn hot and way too conservative, but its home.

I played Ninja Gaiden on the NES growing up. That's the extent of my martial arts.

interests: theology, Christianity, also zombies, also really bad horror movies (and good ones too, video games, music of varying types, guitar, singing, Doctor Who, blogging

I have kind of fallen down on the job when it comes to reading those book things that are made of paper, mainly because I don't feel like doing things that take brain power when I get home from work. I used to be a voracious reader. I like to read books on theology and apologetics, particularly Timothy Keller. I'm also a big Stephen King fan.

I have a blog on Michael's sidebar thingy.

  3. D'Ma or Ruth or hey you! Call me anything you like, just don't call me late for dinner.

The place I live is Small Town, Bible Belt, USA. It's kind of like Mayberry R.F.D.

    Does Kung Fu Theater count?

Interests: Traveling, reading, cooking, eating, crime dramas (i.e. C.S.I., Criminal Minds), recently running, gardening and sewing.

Stuff I like to read: I'll read anything that has words on it. I can't watch CNN or HLN or Faux News for the scrolling stuff at the bottom. I'll read a cereal box if it's sitting in front of me. I enjoy reading sci fi action and mysteries. My favorite book is Fahrenheit 451.

I can be a bit of a goofball.

    That is all.

  4. Question: Who are you? (Real names optional, character sketches encouraged)

Answer: I am who I am and that's who I am. Good character. I'm lousy at sketching. :-p

Question: How would you describe the place where you live?

    Answer: Home.

Question: What (if any) martial arts have you taken? (My definition is pretty loose, and includes things like fencing, wrestling, and the SCA. If you're secretly a ninja, you don't have to admit it here.)

Answer: For many years I used the name Ninja Boo on a forum. :-)

Question: What's your strangest hobby or interest? (...that you're comfortable talking about, anyway.)

    Answer: Blogging.

Question: What sorts of things do you like to read?

Answer: Books about the human mind/body. Neuroscience. Non-fiction.

Question: What else should we know about you?

Answer: I don't like giving out my real name or disclosing my exact whereabouts. *grin* I excel at obfuscating. My favourite things to do at this time in my life are gardening, motorcycling, photography, crocheting &/or knitting, nature. I feel like my memory is fading and that I have more favourite things but can't remember them. *giggle* My favourite movie is Patch Adams. I love to be around children and I love to play. Watch me around children and you'll see the real me. :-) Married my highschool sweety and in total been together for 39 years. I still think he's hot. *blush*

  5. Paul Sunstone. I live in a cottage in an older part of Colorado Springs, Colorado, within a short hop and a skip to the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. Which is nice because I can't seem to get enough of the wilderness.

My strangest hobby -- I'm actually the only one I know who even attempts this -- is to now and then hie myself to an erotic dance club where I meditate while watching the dancers. It's been a while since I last did such a thing, but those meditations were immensely helpful to me in understanding desire.

The internet and my own inclinations have changed my reading habits. Almost everything I read nowadays is online. Even novels. Mostly, I read non-fiction. And I have vague plans to start reading physical books again.

By the way, I have an "About You" page for my blog readers. It's certainly optional, but if you're interested, it can be found here.

  6. I'm the agnostics wife, TAW or just the AW.

I live in Bible Belt, stinkin Hot, Oklahoma. In a small town, next to a kinda small town, next to a big city.

I have taken absolutely no martial arts at all. Though I've engaged in some play karate with one of my sons. Who has no interest in taking karate, but likes to pretend he knows it.

I like deranged shows, like Six Feet Under, Dexter, True Blood,Walking Dead, SG1(it used to be my favorite show),crime shows and Sponge Bob because I've been forced to watch it and it grew on me. Except that one episode where Patrick eats a lot of chocolate. That one is super annoying.

I like reading fiction books mostly because I don't really want to think too hard when I read. Though I'm up for a good biography too. I do a lot of reading online, but I refuse to get a nook or any e-reader. I prefer to have the actual book in my hands, I like having to turn the page and the smell of a new book. I guess I'm weird that way.

I like photography, blogging, and decorating my house.

  7. I forgot to mention that my strangest or most interesting hobby would be that I really like to shoot guns.

  8. > Who are you?

My name is Mike. You might know me as Mike, or possibly that guy, or the crazy one. You know who I am....

    > How would you describe the place where you live?

Some have likened it to a fancy wooden box, others have described it as a dungeon. The real truth is it's much more horrifying than that. It's a suburban apartment the size of a medium house.

    > What (if any) martial arts have you taken?

A couple months of Tae-kwon-do. Not even enough to get past the white belt, my contract ending with the place my instructor was working at probably helped that.

    > What's your strangest hobby or interest?

Strangest would probably be either collecting pure samples of various elements, or performing minor chemistry experiments in the kitchen. And, no ... I'm not talking about that potato lasagna† I made the other night.

What sorts of things do you like to read?

I tend toward non-fiction. I enjoy your Deranged Cultist posts. Wikipedia is probably #1. That website is a time vortex.

What else should we know about you?

As unstable as I seem, I'm actually reasonably sane ... for the most part. I think. Yeah.

† Not really. The idea sounds too horrible to actually implement. If I truly created something like that I would probably bring about the end of the world.

  9. * Who are you? (Real names optional, character sketches encouraged)
    * How would you describe the place where you live?
More redneck than the south and midwest. Which is tripping me out since I'm from the midwest and thought I knew from redneck. Pretty scenery here though.

    * What (if any) martial arts have you taken?
None really. I've had a wee bit of stage combat but it's such a far cry from the same thing unless you take a metric crapload of it.

    * What's your strangest hobby or interest?
I've developed a really unfortunate addiction to Dragon Age fanfic. I didn't think I was a fan fic person but that stupid game sucked me in hard.

    * What sorts of things do you like to read?
Mostly genre fiction (with a sci fi preference) but I'm a little all over the map sometimes. I'll go on these kicks where I only read philosophy or crime thrillers or something for months on end.

    * What else should we know about you?
I'm completely off my rocker. I goof off on wikipedia too much. I need a job. I'm trying to revamp my blog so if you go there, sorry about the mess.

Feel free to leave comments; it lets me know that people are actually reading my blog. Interesting tangents and topic drift just add flavor. Linking to your own stuff is fine, as long as it's at least loosely relevant. Be civil, and have fun!
